As a Bible reader I can understand how you would need to edit out parts in order to use it for domination. It’s become popular to point out all the wrong Christianity has done. And I guess if that makes people feel superior in someway, then whatever floats your boat.

But in European history, the anti slavery movement was led by bible reading christians. People like William Wilberforce, Granville Sharpe, and Thomas Clarkson often quoted biblical scripture in their speeches and letters to governments.

In America, black men such as Absalom Jones, James Pennington, and Henry Highland Garnet were highly respected bible ministers who condemned chattel slavery both from the pulpit and through their work as church leaders, teachers, community organizers, and activists.

Anna, thank you for this illuminating article. It really shows how necessary it was to suppress parts of the Bible in order to suppress people.
