Your article is a reminder of how even the most formidable figures, like Napoleon, are susceptible to the interplay of emotions.

Ultimately, it serves as a reminder that behind every historical figure lies a human being with dreams, insecurities, and a longing for connection.

I’m an American who has lived in Europe for 18 years, Most recently in Portugal. The Portuguese celebrate “Victory over Napoleon Day” because the Portuguese were invaded by Napoleon’s armies three times and all three times they were able to repel their conquest.

Although they have pride in never having been conquered by Napoleon, you wouldn’t believe the respect he has among the Portuguese. It’s almost as if they see him as a national hero.

And I think this is true for most of southern Europe. Napoleon has hero status, not only for his military endeavors, but because of what he preached. The common man of southern Europe believed in him.
